A unique night in Havana

Some days ago, we received an invitation from our friends in Havana’s art scene to a private event on the roof of a cigar warehouse building in the old part of the city. The event was truly unique and fun, with incredible scenery of beautiful old grunge buildings that you can only find in Havana.

Though I was surprised when a concert suddenly started, a young talented Cuban singer who goes by the stage name of CIMAFUNK took the scene and blasted it with great music, wit, and contagious energy.

I was introduced to CIMAFUNK through a couple of youtube videos by a friend back in Europe. Then I saw something different in his music and approach, but after seeing him LIVE, all I can say is refreshing and fun!

Erik (Cimafunk) and myself in our first meeting in Havana

His music is a fusion of Nigerian Afrobeat, Funk, and Pop, tinted here and there with Son and Afro-Cuban elements. CIMAFUNK is new black Cuban culture, and his blackness comes elegantly as his winning card. Cuba is in the transition process, and race relations have been a complex subject for Cuban society. However, it is only recently that the topic has been attracting attention through the media. And CIMAFUNK is one of the young artists taking his unapologetic blackness with pride, elegance, and fun.

His backing band is excellent, and one can feel their friendship through their playing. But, most of all, they enjoy their leader’s spontaneity and freedom..!

After seeing the concert, I arranged a meeting with CIMAFUNK to explore ways to work together. Keep tuned for updates, but check this out! 🙂
